This scan, in numbers

Two colours, two different jobs.

Every one of her reports gives a size for the red and none for the blue — and her oncologist measures and treats the red as the tumour. Her own reports describe the blue as tissue reacting to treatment: swelling, healing, and scar tissue from the surgery. An MRI cannot say precisely what sits inside that signal, so in her type of tumour the blue is watched closely for change rather than measured. Neither outline is a perfect edge: the red is the number her team acts on; the blue is what they keep watching.

This area doesn't take up the dye, and the reports don't give it a size. Much of it is the brain reacting to everything it has been through — swelling and healing from the operation. Her doctors have never called this area tumour: the red is what they measure. A scan can't say exactly what's inside it, so the team watches it over time instead.
